When you’ve decided to get a rug for your front room in order to add a splash of colour then you’ve got a little decision to make. Before you measure up and start looking for rugs of a certain size, you’ve got to choose how your furniture will be arranged on the rug.

Coffee tables usually go in the centre so that’s pretty much taken care of but chairs and sofas offer a few more options. One option is to have your seating directly on the rug itself, in which case you will need to look for large rugs that accommodate a few items of furniture.

Otherwise, you might prefer to have the seating around the edges of the rug with a little border of floor separating them. Smaller rugs will be in order here because you don’t want to have to place your seating too far away from one another.

However, there is a third option. You can place your seating half-on and half-off the rug. This is a nice informal arrangement that allows you to use quite a large rug for maximum effect. This works for both traditional and modern rugs.
