For snappers across the world, August 19th is no ordinary day: it’s World Photography Day!
Imagine what would it be like to live in a world without photographs. There would be no real way to explore different corners of the world without going to see them or no choice of sharing your life with friends and family.
Today, photography has turned into an incredible part of our lives and has evolved into something that connects every one of us. In that spirit, people across the world are celebrating 178 years of photography with World Photography Day on August 19.
It shows our societies’ passion for photography, amongst both amateur and professional photographers. World Photography Day reminds us of the value of photography. Whether you’re using a mobile phone, GoPro, or DSLR, this day is meant to encourage everyone to join.
“A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it. It is, in a word, effective.” – Irving Penn
History of World Photography Day
World Photography Day finds its origins in the invention of the Daguerreotype. The date was chosen as to honour the development of this photographic process by Joseph Nicèphore Nièpce and Louis Daguerre in the year 1837 on the same date. It was also the same date in 1839 on which the French government had purchased the patent and announced the invention as a gift quoting “Free to the World.”
World Photography Day has become one of the biggest photography celebrations in the world. It began as a way to encourage people to capture the moments they live every day. Also to share it with the world and get inspired by the fellow photographers.
