To kickstart our top 35 best-haunted house horror movies is the 1980 classic: The Shining. Jack Torrance becomes the winter caretaker of the Overlook Hotel up in the secluded mountains of Colorado. Jack, being a family man, takes his wife and son to the hotel to keep him company throughout the long and isolated nights. During their stay, strange things occur when Jack’s son Danny becomes plagued by psychic premonitions and Jack himself becomes a crazed murderer.

Jack slowly slips into insanity as he gets cabin fever and starts seeing frightening visions. After being convinced by a waiter’s ghost to “correct” the family. Jack goes completely insane and the situation takes a sinister turn.

The Shining Fact: The hotel that was the inspiration for The Shining is known as ‘The Stanley Hotel’ and is thought to be haunted! Many staff reportedly hear parties in empty ballrooms, haunting piano music with no one playing, and even an apparition that steals jewellery luggage and watches!

It (2017)

IT is a rehash of the classic 1990 movie of the same name. After recent cases of disappearing local kids in the town of Derry, Maine. ‘IT’ follows a group of kids dubbed “The Losers’ Club” during their summer holidays in 1989. After discovering the shape-shifting demonic entity, the kids must decide whether to fight their biggest fears or give in and let it win.

‘IT’ Fact: The number 27 is a number that is eerily associated with this story. The 2017 edition of the movie was released 27 years after the original television release. In the book, it is mentioned that ‘IT’ returns to Derry approximately every 27 years. Jonathan Brandis, who played young Bill in the original film, died at 27 years old. The 2017 edition also released one month after Bill Skarsgård (Pennywise) 27th birthday.

The year is 1963, the night: Halloween. Police are called to 43 Lampkin Ln. only to discover that 15-year-old Judith Myers has been stabbed to death by her 6-year-old brother, Michael Myers. After being institutionalised for 15 years, Myers breaks out on the night before Halloween.

15 years on from his psychiatric incarceration, Myers manages to escape and heads for his hometown. No one knows, nor wants to find out, what will happen when he returns. The only person who realises the significance of this is Myers’ psychiatrist, Dr. Loomis. He knows Michael is returning to Haddonfield, but will he be able to stop him in time?

Halloween Fact: Of all the female leads (all the girls are supposed to be in high school), only Jamie Lee Curtis was a teenager at the time of shooting.

Scream (1996)

One year on from her mother’s death, Sydney Prescott, and her friends start experiencing strange phone calls. They later find out that the calls are coming from a crazed serial killer. Who wears a white-faced mask alongside a large black robe, looking for revenge.

Scream Fact: To keep Drew Barrymore crying and looking scared. Director Wes Craven kept telling her real-life stories about animal cruelty. She is a keen animal lover in real life.

In the early 1980’s, a psychopath named Fred Krueger – known as the Springwood Slasher – murdered several children using a glove fitted with razor blades attached to the fingers. When a foolish decision by a judge sets Krueger free, an angry mob of parents whose children he terrorised and murdered, burn Kruger alive in the boiler room where he worked.

Years after his death, the children of those responsible for Krueger’s death, experience terrifying nightmares involving a burnt man wearing a glove with razor blades on the fingers. The ghost of Fred haunts their dreams and when Nancy’s best friend Tina dies violently in her sleep. Nancy realises she must find a way to stop the evil psychopath’s reign of terror.

A Nightmare On Elm Street Fact: This was Johnny Depp’s debut film. One of the main reasons Johnny Depp was chosen was because director Wes Craven’s daughter thought he was “dreamy.”

Trick ‘r’ Treat (2007)

It is said that Halloween is the night when the dead rise to walk among us and other unspeakable things roam free.

Five interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer. A college virgin might have just met the guy for her. A group of teenagers pull a mean prank. A woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband. And finally, a mean old man meets his match with a demonic, supernatural trick-or-treater.

This is everything you could wish for in Halloween horror movies.

Trick ‘r’ Treat Fact: Most of the Jack O’ Lanterns were made from either foam or ceramic. An on-set joke was that no pumpkins were harmed during the making of this movie.

The Conjuring films are a series of horror movies that present a fictional take on the real-life cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren. In 1971, family man Roger Perron and his wife Carolyn moved to an old farmhouse in Rhode Island. Along with their daughters Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy and April. The family finds a hidden basement with the door locked and soon begin to be haunted by noises and ghosts. Ed and Lorraine Warren are called to try and help.

Upon arrival to the house, Ed and Lorraine feel that the house is possessed by a fiend. After discovering that a mother from the past sacrificed her baby to the devil. Ed and Lorraine do all they can to rid the family of the devilish spirits and to make the farm safe again.

Conjuring Fact: During the filming of one of the ‘Conjuring’ horror movies, it is said that a priest had to be called on set! It is reported that a heavy stage curtain was frequently moving, despite there being no reason for its movement. Hold onto your cross when watching these horror movies!

The Autopsy Of Jane Doe (2016)

While investigating the murder of a family, Sheriff Sheldon and his team are puzzled with the discovery of the body of a stranger buried in the basement. However, it does not fit to the crime scene. They move the corpse of Jane Doe to the coroner, Tommy Tilden and asks to keep the cause of death hidden from the media until further notice.

The Autopsy Of Jane Doe Fact: The names “John Doe” or “John Roe” for men. “Jane Doe” or “Jane Roe” for women. “Johnny Doe” and “Janie Doe” for children, or just “Doe” for non-gender-specifically are often used as placeholder names for a party whose identity is unknown or must be withheld in a legal action, case, or discussion!

Get Out was one of the most anticipated horror movies of 2017, and for good reason! Rose Armitage is takes her boyfriend, Chris Washington, to meet her parents for the first time. The film plays on race, and so Chris feels uneasy about how the family will treat him, as he’s black, and they’re white.

After being in the house for a while, Chris notices that some of the African-American staff are acting oddly.  He soon after eventually discovers the Armitage’s sinister motives, Chris decides it is time to get out.

‘Get Out’ Fact: During the movie, the number 237 is mentioned over the P.A. system. It has been confirmed by the horror movies director, James Peele, that this was a direct reference to the terrifying hotel room in The Shining.

The Mist (2007)

The Draytons – David, Steff and their son Billy – live in a small Maine town. One night, a ferocious storm hits the area and damages their home. After heading into town for supplies, David, Billy and their neighbour Brent discover that the storm is accompanied by a strange mist that ultimately traps David, Billy and their neighbour Brent inside a store.

The Mist Fact: During an action scene in the film, a man runs into a wire rotating-book shelf in the grocery store. If you look carefully, you can clearly see that all the books on the shelf are written by Stephen King. In case you didn’t know, The Mist was originally a horror novella written by King, before being transformed into a movie.

The Babadook is a psychological thriller-horror movie that follows Amelia, a single mother who struggles to raise her troubled son Samuel.  Samuel finds a book sitting on the top shelf, titled “Mr. Babadook”. After reading this, his mother begins to have nightmares about the Babadook Samuel acts oddly himself. Eventually, after stranger occurrences the pair see the Babadook himself and realise they need to find a way to solve the problem.

Babadook Fact: The Babadook is a gay icon! Towards the end of 2016, a Tumblr user started a joke thread about how he thought the Babadook may be gay. “Gay Babadook” was born when a somewhat ironic post to Tumblr in October went viral.

This doesn’t make him any less terrifying!

Zombieland (2009)

Zombies have taken over America. A shy and inexperienced college student, Columbus (Jesse Eisenburg) has survived by following his 30 rules: such as “look in the back seat,” and the “double-tap.” Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) and his cohorts follow the list of survival rules and zombie-killing strategies as they make their way toward a rumoured safe haven; An LA amusement park they’ve heard is zombie free.

Zombieland Fact: In the movie, Tallahassee appears to be searching solely for Twinkies. Many people may not know what a Twinkie is. It is an American cake snack, marketed as a “Golden Sponge Cake with Creamy Filling”. However, as Woody Harrelson is a vegan and these aren’t, special Twinkies had to be made.

Next up, Insidious. Believe it or not, Patrick Wilson is once again a major role in yet another horror film! While this may be very confusing, it doesn’t make Insidious any less frightening. The horror movie follows, parents Josh and Renée Lambert and their two sons Dalton and Foster. Things take a turn for the worst as they experience terror when their eldest son falls off a ladder, hits his head and slips into a coma.

After reviewing with the doctors and finding out their son has no head trauma, the couple have no idea what has happened to their son. After horrible, indecipherable events start to take place, they enlist the help of Elise Rainer, a paranormal investigator, who brings the family sinister and horrifying news about their boy.

Insidious Fact: The red-faced demon in this movie was nicknamed the lipstick face demon. This was down to the makeup department literally painting Joseph Bishara, the actor who portrayed the demon, with lipstick every time he was in a scene! To be fair, we’ve seen worse lipstick errors on a night out!

The Purge (2013)

It’s 2022, and the gun-toting United States of America are celebrating a new annual holiday known as the “Purge”. The Purge is a 12-hour period in which any crime is legal, including murder. James Sandin, a successful salesman lives with his family in a nice house in the suburb. During Purge night, Charlie, James’ son, sees a stranger fleeing from a group that re hunting him down and decides to let him in their home.

The Purge Fact: The Purge takes place one night before the Spring equinox to symbolise renewing, as the deeper meaning of spring equinox is spiritual resurrection.

Accompanied by her 12-year-old daughter Regan, actress Chris McNeil relocates to Washington D.C. where she is filming a movie. It’s all going swimmingly until Regan begins to act strangely. She undergoes various neurological tests but doctors can find nothing to explain her behaviour.

As Regan’s situation reaches crisis proportions she has to be tied to her bed, and her mother turns to Father Karras, a Roman Catholic priest and psychiatrist to see if an exorcism might be the solution to their problem. After the consultation, they decide to call Father Merrin, who has previously conducted an exorcism and come face to face with the devil.

The Exorcist Fact: Due to death threats against Linda Blair from religious zealots who believed the film “glorified Satan”, Warner Bros. had bodyguards protecting her for six months after the horror movies release.

I Am Legend (2007)

Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a scientist who was unable to stop the spread of the terrible virus that was incurable and man-made. Immune, Neville now believes he is the last human survivor in what is left of New York City, and possibly even the world. Desperate to find any other survivors, he scouts the city scavenging with his dog, Sam. He attempts to find a cure by using his own immune blood to reverse the virus, but will he be able to do so?

I Am Legend Fact: Before filming began on I Am Legend, Will Smith went on ‘dates’ with Abbey, the dog who played Sam, so he could get to know her better. After filming ended, Will grew so enamoured of his canine co-star that he tried to adopt her, but unfortunately, Abbey’s trainer couldn’t give her up.

After a birthday party in a mall, 3 teenagers are abducted by an unknown man who sprays them all with some form of chemical to knock them out. Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy) keeps the three teenage girls in his basement for unknown reasons and the girls soon learn that the man has DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) meaning he has several personalities living inside his mind.

His psychologist Dr. Karen Fletcher is aware of his personalities but has no reason to suspect him of being the kidnapper of the three girls. Casey attempts to manipulate the weakest of Kevin’s personalities to escape, but escape is the least of her problems.

Split Fact: Inspiration for the movie, real-life multiple-personality Billy Milligan, was the first person diagnosed with multiple personality disorder to use an insanity defence because of that disorder, and first to be acquitted thus. Milligan had 24 personalities.

Sinister (2012)

Writer Ellison Oswalt moves into a house where a horrific crime once took place, without informing his family. He begins researching the crime to write a new book to further his career. He discovers some “snuff” film footage in the house and sees a figure in each of the horror movies.

Sinister Fact: There is very little blood, almost no cursing, and no sex in this movie because the filmmakers were hoping for a PG rating. However, they still got a 15 based on content alone.

A young woman gets into a car accident and awakes with a chain on her leg in a mysterious room. Soon afterwards, Howard, a large man, walks in and informs her that he is keeping her underground as the air is no longer breathable due to an attack.

Howard, Michelle and another man all stay under the command of Howard. until Michelle begins to get suspicious of Howard. Howard’s controlling and menacing nature makes Michelle want to escape making her take matters into her own hands. Will she ever discover the truth about the outside world?

10 Cloverfield Lane Fact: The name of the petrol station that Michelle stops at to refuel is named “Kelvin”. Abrams frequently works the name Kelvin into his projects in tribute to his grandfather, Harry Kelvin, who the filmmaker said bought him his very first Super 8 camera.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

A young girl dies under the care of her parish priest. While attending college, Emily fell ill. After medical care fails to better her, she turned to her faith. Under the care of her priest, she dies, and he, therefore, goes on trial for her death. He is represented by a career-minded and driven lawyer who does not believe in God. Thus, is the story of Emily Rose, told by flicking between those in the trial, and the memories of those who watched her through her possession.

The Exorcism Of Emily Rose Fact: Based on the true story of Anneliese Michel, a young German woman who suffered a similar fate to the fictional Emily Rose in the 1970s. The above images are both Anneliese.

A young couple, Katie and Micah, move into a new home and Micah records their life on his video camera. After strange events in the night, Katie admits that as a young child, she had once experienced a ghostly presence in her room and fears that it may have returned for her.

Paranormal Activity Fact: Steven Spielberg thought his DVD of the film was haunted. Yes, you read that correctly. Spielberg took a copy of the DVD home to watch, but got freaked out when the door to his bedroom locked by itself.

The Omen (2006)

Robert Thorn and his wife Katherine are unable to have a baby after they lost their first one due to complications with Katherines uterus. Robert and Katherine decide to adopt a child and name it Damien. As he grows up, Katherine realises that Damien is evil, while Robert is contacted by Father Brennan, who informs him that Damien is in fact the son of devil.

The Omen Fact: Harvey Stephens, who portrayed Damien in The Omen (1976), appears in this remake as the tabloid reporter who asks Robert Thorn if the deceased nanny “was on drugs”. The more you know!

If you’ve not seen the 1979 classic Alien, what have you been doing!? A commercial crew aboard the deep space towing vessel, Nostromo are returning from a mining mission when they pick up an SOS signal from a distant moon. What they don’t know is that the SOS signal is like no other.

Following the signal, the crew discover another crew, of which no one is alive. Initially thinking they are alone, the crew soon realise they were wrong when an alien stowaway is discovered on the ship. The terror begins when the crew encounter a nest of unknown alien eggs inside the ship and are unsure of what to do with them.

The Silence Of The Lambs (1991)

Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), a young intelligent FBI trainee, has been sent to the Baltimore state hospital for the criminally insane to interview an inmate, Dr. Hannibal “the cannibal” Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). Dr. Lecter was once a brilliant and widely renowned psychiatrist who snapped and turned into a cannibalistic serial killer. She must match wits with the extremely intelligent Dr. Lecter, and use him for clues in the search for “Buffalo Bill” – an unstoppable, psychopathic serial killer.

Silence Of The Lambs Fact: In preparation for his role Sir Anthony Hopkins studied files of serial killers, as well as visiting prisons, and studying convicted murderers. He was even present during some court hearings concerning gruesome murderers and serial killings!

Life isn’t too good for Shaun (Simon Pegg), a 30-something loser with a dull, easy existence. He lives with his best friend Ed (Nick Frost), neglects his girlfriend Liz and despises his step-dad. When Liz dumps Shaun, he vows to get his life back on track. Unfortunately, this is the day that the dead has decided to come back to life.

When the town is inexplicably overrun with zombies, Shaun must rise to the occasion and protect. With a cricket bat and Ed by his side, Shaun sets out to rescue those he loves and those he doesn’t love (“sorry Philip”), and heads to the safest place he knows, the local pub entitled “The Winchester”.

The film is part of a trilogy known as the ‘Cornetto Trilogy’ and if you have the time, watch them! They’re comedy gold.

The Sixth Sense (1999)

Malcom Crowe (Bruce Willis) is a child psychologist who receives an award on the same night that he is visited by a very unhappy ex-patient. After this encounter, Crowe takes on the task of curing a young boy Cole, who “sees dead people”. Cole’s mother (Toni Collette) is unsure of what to do about her son’s increasing problems leaving Crowe as the boy’s only hope.

The Sixth Sense Fact: The movie’s line, “I see dead people,” was voted as the #100 of “The 100 Greatest Movie Lines” by Premiere magazine in 2007.

The Others is worth watching as it’s a beautifully made, and insanely creepy ghost story.

The Others Fact: The disease the children have is an actual disease known as Xeroderma Pigmentosum which is basically an extreme sensitivity to sunlight. It is very rare with only around a thousand people in the world suffering from it.

As Above, So Below (2014)

Miles of twisting catacombs lie beneath the streets of Paris, and contain the eternal home to countless souls. When a team of explorers venture into the uncharted maze of bones, they uncover dark secrets that lie within this city of the dead. A journey into madness and terror, As Above, So Below reaches deep into the human psyche to reveal the personal demons that can haunt us all.

As Above, So Below Fact: This was the first ever production that secured permission from the French government to film in the catacombs. The film utilises a set of narrow, winding tunnels of the Paris catacombs, complete with real mint skeletons creepily arranged centuries ago.

In London, a young solicitor known as Arthur Kipps still grieves the death of his beloved wife after she died delivering their son Joseph four years ago. His employer sends him to examine the documentation of the Eel Marsh House that belonged to the recently deceased Mrs. Drablow.

Arthur heads to the isolated manor and soon he finds that Eel Marsh House terrifyingly creepy and learns of the local legend “the woman in black”. It is said that whenever she appears, a child in the village dies.

Dark Skies (2013)

As the Barret family’s peaceful suburban life is rocked by an escalating series of disturbing events, it becomes obvious that their family is being targeted by a terrifying and deadly villain. They come to learn that a scary and fatal force is after them meaning the family must draw on their courage and determination to protect each other.

Dark Skies Fact: During the movie, hundreds of birds commit suicide by flying into the Barrett family home. This is based off an annual event that occurs in Jatinga, India. Just after sunset, between 7 and 10 pm in the months of September and October, hundreds of birds descend from the sky, plummeting to their deaths by crashing into buildings and trees and the villagers waiting to kill them on the ground.

Kate and John Coleman are rebuilding their troubled marriage after the loss of their baby and this leads them to adoption. When they meet the nine-year-old Estonian girl Esther at the St. Marina Orphanage, they immediately fall in love with the well-educated orphan and decide to adopt her.

Their young son, Daniel, is immediately hostile to his new sister; but their deaf-mute daughter, Max, is enchanted with her Eventually, after a series of disturbing events, Kate calls Sister Abigail at the orphanage where the nun informs her that Esther has a troubled and mysterious history.

Orphan Fact: The subtle uneasiness of the horror movies poster is due to the image of Esther’s face; it is perfectly symmetrical. Half of her face has been mirrored to form a whole face, as shown by the identical twists in her hair on either side.

Lights Out (2016)

Lights out is the type of horror movie that will make you double check your hallway when it’s dark.  As a child, Rebecca had childhood fears of the dark when the lights went out. Now her brother, Martin, is experiencing the same fears. As Rebecca gets closer to unlocking the truth, there is no denying that all their lives are in danger once the lights go out.

Lights Out Fact: Here’s an eerie fact for you. The mannequins in the basement were not brought in for the movie. They were already placed there by the owner of the house. Now we’re not saying there’s something weird about that, but there’s something weird about that!

Young Andy Barclay sees a commercial for a ‘Good Guy’ doll on TV, and asks his mother for one for his birthday. At work, Andy’s mother discovers a peddler selling one for a low price, and she buys it. The reason for the cheap price? The spirit of Charles Lee Ray, aka ‘The Lakeshore Strangler’, who died at the hands of police the night before had transferred his spirit to the doll by voodoo!

That night, Andy’s babysitter is pushed from their 5th-floor window to her death, and only young Andy knows that ‘Chucky’, the doll, is responsible for that a death and a series of murders that follow.

Child’s Play Fact: Chucky’s full name, Charles Lee Ray, is derived from the names of notorious killers Charles Manson, Lee Harvey Oswald (assassin of John F. Kennedy) and James Earl Ray (assassin of Martin Luther King).

Drag Me To Hell (2009)

Christine Brown is a loan officer at a bank and refuses a time extension on a loan to an old woman, Mrs. Ganush, who now faces foreclosure and the loss of her house. In retaliation, the old woman places a curse on her which, Christine dismisses. After a series of odd events Christine begins to come to terms with the reality of the curse.

Drag Me To Hell Fact: On the way to the cemetery, Christine says “I’m going to get some” which is a reference to Ash’s line “Come get some” in The Evil Dead (1981) series.

Phoenix office worker Marion Crane is unable to marry her lover Sam as he has an alimony from his previous marriage meaning he must give most of his money away.

One Friday, Marion is entrusted with $40,000 from her employer and sees the opportunity to take the money and start a new life. Marion leaves town and heads towards Sam’s California store. After tiring and after lost during the long drive due to being caught in a storm, she heads towards the “Bates Motel”, a motel managed by a quiet young man called Norman.

Psycho Fact: Anthony Perkins, the actor who played the deranged killer, was paid $40,000 for his role which is the exact same amount of money as Marion stole. That amount of cash in 1960, would be equivalent to approximately $315,000 by today’s standards!

“Bates Motel” is a contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film “Psycho,” and gives a portrayal of how Norman Bates’ (Freddie Highmore) psyche unravels through his teenage years. Viewers will discover the dark, twisted backstory of Norman Bates and how deeply intricate his relationship with his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga), truly is.

Bates Motel Fact: Unlike Psycho (1960), which is set in Fairvale, California, Bates Motel is set in the fictional coastal town of White Pine Bay, Oregon. The series’ actual set in Aldergrove, British Columbia.

American Horror Story has gathered somewhat of a cult gathering after it first aired in October of 2011. With 7 seasons under its belt, it’s become well known for its unconventional horror and gory scenes. The series plays on both physical and psychological horrors throughout the 7 seasons and focuses on a new storyline each season ranging from a cast of circus freaks to a coven of witches.

AHS Fact: On September 2, 2014, show creator Ryan Murphy announced that all the seasons are connected to each other in some way.

Stranger Things is a modern masterpiece in terms of horror TV series’. Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s, the first season focuses on the investigation into the disappearance of a young boy amid supernatural events occurring around the town including the appearance of a psychokinetic girl who helps the missing boy’s friends in their own search.

There is even a second season announced that’s dropping this Halloween! The second season is set a year after the first, and deals with attempts of the characters to return to normal and consequences from that season. Can Halloween hurry up already!?

Stranger Things Fact: Millie Bobby Brown had her head shaved for her role while her mother filmed the whole cutting session with a camcorder. Her father was so traumatised by the event, he sobbed and couldn’t bear to watch. She had to be persuaded by Directing duo Matt and Ross Duffer who inspired her by showing her Charlize Theron’s badass look as Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road.

The Walking Dead is TV series that has gained a massive cult following. Sheriff Deputy Rick Grimes gets shot and falls into a coma. When he finally awakens, he finds himself in the middle of a Zombie Apocalypse. Not knowing what to do he sets out to find his family. The show is all about survival, risk-taking, and the things you must do to survive.

The Walking Dead Fact: During an episode, Daryl discovers a one-eyed dog striving to survive the apocalypse like everyone else around him. The dog, named Dooley, only has one eye, as it saved its owner from a carjacker! Who’s a good boy!

The X Files may have just celebrated its 24th anniversary but it’s age doesn’t make it any less scary. The X-Files is based on two FBI agents, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully who work in an unassigned detail of the bureau called the X-Files investigating cases dealing with unexplained paranormal phenomena. Mulder, a true believer, and Scully, a skeptic, perceive their cases from stand points of science and the paranormal.
