During their stay, strange things occur when Jack’s son Danny becomes plagued by psychic premonitions and Jack himself becomes a crazed murderer.

‘IT’ Fact: The number 27 is a number that is eerily associated with this story. The 2017 edition of the movie was released 27 years after the original television release. In the book, it is mentioned that ‘IT’ returns to Derry approximately every 27 years. Jonathan Brandis, who played young Bill in the original film, died at 27 years old. The 2017 edition also released one month after Bill Skarsgård (Pennywise) 27th birthday.

Halloween (1978)

The year is 1963, the night: Halloween. Police are called to 43 Lampkin Ln. only to discover that 15-year-old Judith Myers has been stabbed to death by her 6-year-old brother, Michael Myers. After being institutionalised for 15 years, Myers breaks out on the night before Halloween.

15 years on from his psychiatric incarceration, Myers manages to escape and heads for his hometown. No one knows, nor wants to find out, what will happen when he returns. The only person who realises the significance of this is Myers’ psychiatrist, Dr. Loomis. He knows Michael is returning to Haddonfield, but will he be able to stop him in time?

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

In the early 1980’s, a psychopath named Fred Krueger – known as the Springwood Slasher – murdered several children using a glove fitted with razor blades attached to the fingers. When a foolish decision by a judge sets Krueger free, an angry mob of parents whose children he terrorised and murdered, burn Kruger alive in the boiler room where he worked.

The Conjuring (2013)

The Conjuring films are a series of horror movies that present a fictional take on the real-life cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren. In 1971, family man Roger Perron and his wife Carolyn moved to an old farmhouse in Rhode Island. Along with their daughters Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy and April. The family finds a hidden basement with the door locked and soon begin to be haunted by noises and ghosts. Ed and Lorraine Warren are called to try and help.

‘Get Out’ Fact: During the movie, the number 237 is mentioned over the P.A. system. It has been confirmed by the horror movies director, James Peele, that this was a direct reference to the terrifying hotel room in The Shining.

If you look carefully, you can clearly see that all the books on the shelf are written by Stephen King. The Babadook is a psychological thriller-horror movie that follows Amelia, a single mother who struggles to raise her troubled son Samuel.  Samuel finds a book sitting on the top shelf, titled “Mr. Babadook”. After reading this, his mother begins to have nightmares about the Babadook Samuel acts oddly himself. Eventually, after stranger occurrences the pair see the Babadook himself and realise they need to find a way to solve the problem.

Babadook Fact: The Babadook is a gay icon! Towards the end of 2016, a Tumblr user started a joke thread about how he thought the Babadook may be gay. “Gay Babadook” was born when a somewhat ironic post to Tumblr in October went viral.

This doesn’t make him any less terrifying!

Zombieland Fact: In the movie, Tallahassee appears to be searching solely for Twinkies. Many people may not know what a Twinkie is. It is an American cake snack, marketed as a “Golden Sponge Cake with Creamy Filling”. However, as Woody Harrelson is a vegan and these aren’t, special Twinkies had to be made.

Insidious (2010)

Next up, Insidious. Believe it or not, Patrick Wilson is once again a major role in yet another horror film! While this may be very confusing, it doesn’t make Insidious any less frightening. The horror movie follows, parents Josh and Renée Lambert and their two sons Dalton and Foster. Things take a turn for the worst as they experience terror when their eldest son falls off a ladder, hits his head and slips into a coma.

After horrible, indecipherable events start to take place, they enlist the help of Elise Rainer, a paranormal investigator, who brings the family sinister and horrifying news about their boy.

Insidious Fact: The red-faced demon in this movie was nicknamed the lipstick face demon. This was down to the makeup department literally painting Joseph Bishara, the actor who portrayed the demon, with lipstick every time he was in a scene! To be fair, we’ve seen worse lipstick errors on a night out!

The Purge (2013)

It’s 2022, and the gun-toting United States of America are celebrating a new annual holiday known as the “Purge”. The Purge is a 12-hour period in which any crime is legal, including murder. James Sandin, a successful salesman lives with his family in a nice house in the suburb. During Purge night, Charlie, James’ son, sees a stranger fleeing from a group that re hunting him down and decides to let him in their home.

The Purge Fact: The Purge takes place one night before the Spring equinox to symbolise renewing, as the deeper meaning of spring equinox is spiritual resurrection.

The Exorcist (1973)

Accompanied by her 12-year-old daughter Regan, actress Chris McNeil relocates to Washington D.C. where she is filming a movie. It’s all going swimmingly until Regan begins to act strangely. She undergoes various neurological tests but doctors can find nothing to explain her behaviour.

As Regan’s situation reaches crisis proportions she has to be tied to her bed, and her mother turns to Father Karras, a Roman Catholic priest and psychiatrist to see if an exorcism might be the solution to their problem. After the consultation, they decide to call Father Merrin, who has previously conducted an exorcism and come face to face with the devil.

The Exorcist Fact: Due to death threats against Linda Blair from religious zealots who believed the film “glorified Satan”, Warner Bros. had bodyguards protecting her for six months after the horror movies release.

I Am Legend (2007)

Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a scientist who was unable to stop the spread of the terrible virus that was incurable and man-made. Immune, Neville now believes he is the last human survivor in what is left of New York City, and possibly even the world. Desperate to find any other survivors, he scouts the city scavenging with his dog, Sam. He attempts to find a cure by using his own immune blood to reverse the virus, but will he be able to do so?

I Am Legend Fact: Before filming began on I Am Legend, Will Smith went on ‘dates’ with Abbey, the dog who played Sam, so he could get to know her better. After a birthday party in a mall, 3 teenagers are abducted by an unknown man who sprays them all with some form of chemical to knock them out. Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy) keeps the three teenage girls in his basement for unknown reasons and the girls soon learn that the man has DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) meaning he has several personalities living inside his mind.

10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

A young woman gets into a car accident and awakes with a chain on her leg in a mysterious room. Soon afterwards, Howard, a large man, walks in and informs her that he is keeping her underground as the air is no longer breathable due to an attack.

Alien (1979)

If you’ve not seen the 1979 classic Alien, what have you been doing!? A commercial crew aboard the deep space towing vessel, Nostromo are returning from a mining mission when they pick up an SOS signal from a distant moon. What they don’t know is that the SOS signal is like no other.

Alien Fact: For long shots involving the astronauts, Scott and Derek Vanlint put their own children in space suits to make the humans appear smaller next to the remains of the Space Jockey, the extra-terrestrial pilot whose corpse is found in an empty ship on the planet’s surface. The body was already 26 feet tall!

The Sixth Sense (1999)

Malcom Crowe (Bruce Willis) is a child psychologist who receives an award on the same night that he is visited by a very unhappy ex-patient. After this encounter, Crowe takes on the task of curing a young boy Cole, who “sees dead people”. Cole’s mother (Toni Collette) is unsure of what to do about her son’s increasing problems leaving Crowe as the boy’s only hope.

Just after sunset, between 7 and 10 pm in the months of September and October, hundreds of birds descend from the sky, plummeting to their deaths by crashing into buildings and trees and the villagers waiting to kill them on the ground.

Orphan (2009)

Kate and John Coleman are rebuilding their troubled marriage after the loss of their baby and this leads them to adoption. When they meet the nine-year-old Estonian girl Esther at the St. Marina Orphanage, they immediately fall in love with the well-educated orphan and decide to adopt her.

Stranger Things is a modern masterpiece in terms of horror TV series’. Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s, the first season focuses on the investigation into the disappearance of a young boy amid supernatural events occurring around the town including the appearance of a psychokinetic girl who helps the missing boy’s friends in their own search.
