Designer Brand in Focus: William Yeoward
30 Years of William Yeoward Design
William Yeoward is one of England’s most prolific designers. We discover the key influences behind his glorious crystal, timelessly rich furniture and exuberant fabric designs.
In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
My style is very much based on archival references and in my latest “book blue and white and other stories”. I quote “When you have one foot in the past and one in the future you will probably find THE PRESENT”.
When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
It’s an odd thing to say but the creative journey is all about “the result”. By this I mean that I have a clear idea drawn from much previous thought and rumination on what I want to achieve. So, for example, I see colour far in the future and by the time I’m ready to work on the product I have clarity.
Out of the creative people, you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
Dawn mellow one-time CEO of Bergdorf Goodman store in Manhattan for her steely vision of great design both in fashion and home. She is much missed.
When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
Walk and think and look, today I’m off to Matisse at the royal academy…. who knows what will happen but I will be inspired and what I see will not be used in anything in that context but be put into a huge mental cauldron of ideas.
What’s the best way for someone to add the ‘William Yeoward look’ into their home?
Gently does it! A little bit at a time. Shopping at Yeoward should not be instant gratification followed by years of disappointment it should be a lasting joy!
