It feels like just yesterday we were talking about the upcoming interior design trends for 2016. Now it’s already time to check out what’s in store for 2017. And we’re in for quite a shake-up.

It’s exciting to see some unexpected interior design trends push their way through as we embark into a new year. We will see a modern twist on some old favourites.

Here are some of the top interior design trends to look out for.

The natural look is in!

From the Latin, terra (earth) cotta (cooked or baked), creates cosy and comforting warmth within a space. Much like the colour red; the orange base is also said to stimulate appetite. It is therefore the perfect shade for use in dining rooms and restaurants.

It’s clear why Terracotta is trending and why it has come back with such a strong presence. Its distinct colour and warmth make it perfect for beautiful decorative pieces. Also, its flexibility means it’s available in many different forms.

When it comes to interior design trends, minimal, white spaces loaded with plants still dominate our Pinterest feeds. But we’re beginning to see warmth enter those spaces through earthy tones and new textures.

The Terracotta trend has been popular in Europe for the past 2/3 years since summer 2014. And it is hitting our shores and not just as a colour option, but also in its natural, unadorned form.

In fact, we are currently seeing it used in the design and construction. For a variety of different products, such as small furniture pieces, homewares and accessories. Even the previously cost effective and practical flowerpots are making a comeback.

Like the hugely popular materials of copper, brass and marble, Terracotta is here to stay.

From what we’ve heard various design sources and publications – Cork is making a comeback!

Yes, cork.

Just like what your daily notes are currently pinned too. Or as much as you love poppin’ the cork on wine bottles, it’s time to give it a second chance.

Cork has been making its way back since 2016, but will be even bigger in 2017. This means that you will start to see more cork board walls and decorations in the home.

Creating a cork feature wall helps create a great place to gather inspirational bits and bobs. Also, as demonstrated above, this idea works well as a feature of a bedroom. It helps you stay motivated, organised and productive.

Looking rather beautiful set against crisp white walls or dark tiling, cork walls are quirky, practical, and warm. Not only is cork a stylish material idea that adds warmth and texture to spaces.

You should not be afraid to use it. As it helps to absorb noise and will make for a wonderful addition in any home.

I know what you’re thinking – we didn’t expect this to be an upcoming trend either.

The all-white look has been dominating 2016 and it is still trending. However, it is more than pleasant to pair the two interior design trends together.

We think that incorporating elements of dark green will compliment the white interior trend. Dark shades of green will become the new must-have dark interior colour.

This will be one of the colours to have in your home. And it will be wonderful for an accessory or recliner in the living room. You will see that homes and designers tend to move into greens.

From rich emeralds to soft dusky hues, green is one of our favourite interior design trends. A richer, warmer and bolder colour that seems to transcend all trends. Green will be sure to introduce a harmonious, luxurious and fresh vibe that works well in both modern and traditional spaces.

Go bold and create a statement wall with deep green paint, styled with contrasting natural textures.

Using vibrant jewel tones against muted colours focuses your eyes on soft and sophisticated neutrals, enlarging and warming the space. Or showcase lighter and brighter green hues with style subtle green accents.

As always, certain colours come and go within the interior world.

Jewel tones have overtaken pastel shades in popularity. As they are inspired by metals, space, stars, clouds and the cosmos.

There’s no doubt that the world is having a major “jewel tone” moment right now. So, if jewel tones are your colour then have a think about brightening up your home as the new look for decor will be pure drama!

Jewel tones have always been associated with high society and prestige. We see these colours in intricate rugs and wallpapers of decades before. However, they’re not limited to the rich and famous anymore.

Home trends come and go, but the lasting ones tend to make you feel warm all over. And in 2016, Hygge – the hot new Scandi home trend has been burning up everyone’s Pinterest and Instagram feeds.

This trend couldn’t come at a better time, as winter days darken and grow cold, and you just want to huddle indoors.

Luckily, a centuries-old lifestyle concept exported from the Nordic countries became a key to survival throughout 2016. You might not have heard about “hygge” yet, but the phonetically challenging lifestyle trend had taken the United Kingdom by storm.

The Danish word (pronounced hue-gah) is a feeling or mood that comes from taking genuine pleasure in ordinary, everyday things, like the warm, cosy comforts that make a house a home.

It is an approach to living that embraces positivity and enjoyment of everyday experiences, said to be core concepts of attitudes to life in the Nordic region.

Although the word itself originates from Norway, it was embraced and adopted by the Danes in the 1800s and is now widely used across the Nordic countries.

Are there any winter rituals that make you feel happy, both inside and out?

As metallics are have been so on trend in home décor during 2016. The Copper trend was one of the most popular interior trends of that year, making it one of our favourites.

The warm glow of copper makes it the perfect choice for mixing with other natural materials such as wood and cork, for a ‘rough-luxe’ or rustic feel. Its rich tone also stands out against a whole array of colours.

As copper, can have such dramatic effect within a room it is usually used as small statement pieces because it by far one of the easiest ways to incorporate copper into a design scheme. It works perfectly alongside natural materials such as wood and bare brick to create a rustic or modern loft look.

Copper accents will really pop against such a striking colour and the overall look will exude luxuriousness and sophistication.

As shown above, copper can come in a high shine finish or a brushed matte effect depending on the look you are hoping to achieve within your space. The highly-polished copper is beautiful and has a very high end appeal. Brushed copper is a more muted version and subtly blends into its surroundings.

Copper is a trend that will continue to thrive because of its versatility and aesthetic appeal so don’t be afraid to try introducing it into your home.

All throughout 2016 – the Internet has been mad for marble. On Pinterest, Instagram and lifestyle blogs, design buffs are drawn to the minimalist material like moths to a flame, using it as a crisp, clean and chic backdrop for nearly everything, whether it be their early-morning cup of coffee or their latest kicks.

Working with a neutral colour palette, white marble can make small rooms appear more open. It can add light to dark spaces and a much-needed spring freshness to a room, Marble also happens to perfectly compliment the warmth of copper.

Though marble can be grand, if chosen wisely and used in small doses, the gleaming stone can add a classic touch to any décor. Thinking subtle and merging modern materials to avoid overwhelming the eye.

So, don’t overdo it. However, think again if you regard stone effects as cold! Lavish designs and rich colourways have transformed the effect to stylishly cool rather than chilly. For a chic update, opt for textures that impart perfect imperfection.

Marble may remain as a timeless classic that suits certain new homes, and in 2017, expect to see marble still going strong.
