Happy Star Wars Day! Celebrate #MayThe4th
Looking to do more than just a movie marathon this year? Here are some new ideas for May the 4th!
Holy Sith, you guys, Star Wars Day is upon us again.
May the 4th is approaching faster than an Ewok on a runaway speeder bike — are you ready?
The annual celebration of all things Star Wars is probably old hat to you by now. But maybe you’re looking to change things up this year to make this Star Wars Day one to remember.
With the next installment in the Star Wars franchise, Solo: A Star Wars Story, scheduled to hit UK cinemas in late May 2018, there are more reasons than ever for fans to celebrate this annual holiday.
Just in case you’re in need of some inspiration, we have compiled a list of fun ways you can celebrate your love of a galaxy far, far away.
Watch All the Star Wars Movies, again
You can’t celebrate Star Wars Day without watching at least one of the movies.
While this idea is sort of a no-brainer, there may be no better way to celebrate your love of Star Wars than by revisiting all the movies that have made this sci-fi series so beloved by fans. In case you’re wondering, there are now eight installments in the primary film series that trace the conflict between the evil Sith lords and the noble Jedi masters in a galaxy far, far away.
You heard us. If you watch it chronologically from The Phantom Menace all the way to The Last Jedi, that’s eight movies. Specifically, it’s 17 hours and 40 minutes, and that’s without the special features or extras. (Remember to add Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to the watchlist too). It’s possible (we’ve done it), but, fair warning, you’re going to be overwhelmed afterwards.
If you can believe it, there are some people who’ve never seen Star Wars. So, now’s the time to get busy and watch all the movies.
But if you are watching every movie, the big question is, what order do you watch them in? Should they be viewed in release order 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 7 and 8 or in episode order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8? There really isn’t a right way but we usually watch them in the order they were released.
If that’s not enough of a challenge, add the animated series The Clone Wars and Rebels. It’s your day, so decide yourself you must. Good luck.
Cook Star Wars Themed Treats
So, you’ve watched all the Star Wars movies, read the books, and given back a little along the way. Odds are, you’ve built up quite the appetite, and are looking to continue the day’s revelry.
If you’ve never put your cooking and baking skills to the test with a Star Wars-inspired recipe, there’s no better day to try.
You’ll find a number of eye-catching and awe-inspiring recipes on StarWars.com. From Maz and Cheese to Ewok Donuts, you’ll find something that Star Wars fans of any age would love to taste test on Star Wars Day — even if you’re not a (Jedi) master chef.
Food is an essential part of any holiday. Whip up a galactic smorgasborg of Star Wars-themed recipes! Who could pass up a heaping helping of Maz and Cheese? Not us.
Everyone likes the gal or guy who brings food to work. Especially pastries. Especially sticky buns shaped like Princess Leia’s hair.
Drink Star Wars Themed Cocktails
Toast the saga with the ultimate Star Wars-themed beverages.
With new movies in the last few years, the Star Wars fandom is at an all-time high. While themed drinking accessories like Tiki mugs and barware are becoming popular, so are clever cocktails inspired by the films. We’ve combed through all the recipes and picked the coolest ones to serve at your next space-movie marathon. We promise they’ll taste just like you’re drinking them at the Cantina.
BLUE MILK OF TATOOINE
For true die-hard fans of the Star Wars movie, this first cocktail is a real tasty treat. For the uninformed, there is a part of the Star Wars: A New Hope, where Luke Skywalker can be spied drinking what looks like a blue milkshake.
Based on an actual drink from the Star Wars universe, the blue milk also known as “bantha milk” makes an excellent cocktail. Coconut cream and vanilla syrup lend to the milky consistency, and blue curaçao gives the drink its signature hue. Throw in some gin and classic Tiki flavours, and you have the perfect drink for a Star Wars marathon.
KYLO REN MARGARITA
Are you still mourning the death of Darth Vader? Well don’t worry — so is Kylo Ren. In fact, the only thing more bitter than him is this cocktail as red as his crossguard lightsabre and black as his soul.
Inspired by the angsty villain from The Force Awakens, this Margarita joins the dark side with some fruity additions. Blackberries and cherry juice pump up the flavour of the classic favourite, while black food colouring makes it extra evil. This would be perfect for any Star Wars viewing parties you might be having.
Cheers… and may the force be with you!
WOOKIE FUZZBALL
Inspired by the lovable Chewbacca, this cocktail gives us a nice spicy liquor drink. This drink will put hair on your chest. Have enough of these and your voice will slowly turn into a garbled mess.
This decadent drink is exactly what we imagine Chewy and Han Solo sip on after a hard day’s work. Sweet indulgence is an understatement when spiced rum, hazelnut liqueur and white chocolate liqueur come together with coffee, caramel and chocolate syrups. To add to the fun, the cocktail is garnished with an edible “wookie belt.”
Dress in Star Wars Style
Dressing up for special occasions is important, and May the 4th is no different! Make sure to show that you’re strong with the Force and get decked out in your favourite Star Wars gear.
Wearing anything from your favourite Star Wars t-shirt to full-on stormtrooper gear is completely acceptable. It couldn’t be easier for us to dress up, as there are some great ideas to infuse a little Star Wars fashion into your wardrobe here. A crown braid or some coiled buns can have you channelling the one and only Princess Leia, too.
Send your kids off to school in their favourite Star Wars shirts, and when they get home, they can have some fun going all out dressing up like their favourite characters. There are some amazing Kylo Ren, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo outfits out there. As well as female characters such as Princess Leia, Rey and even Padmé Amidala.
It’s okay to dress up your pet, too. The only thing better than seeing a dog on a normal day is seeing a dog dressed up in a geeky costume for Star Wars day. Bounty hunter bulldogs or Princess poodles are especially encouraged.
Make Your Own Lightsaber
We all love crafts, so what better way to celebrate than to prepare some Star Wars-related crafts?
Everyone wants a lightsaber, and anyone who says otherwise is lying to you, or themselves. As part of becoming a true fighter in the Star Wars universe—be it a Jedi or a Sith Lord—is constructing a lightsaber that is distinctly yours.
And we all have to live with the tragedy that we will never have a pop-up plasma weapon we can hang from our belts as we hang around our favourite wretched hive of scum and villainy.
However, a handmade lightsaber is a must-have addition to any fan’s collection of Star Wars memorabilia, and there’s no shortage of places to make that dream a reality.
You can build your own Jedi weapon on sites like Ultra Sabers, or make them by hand out of pool noodles! If you’re more of a DIY sort of person, you can also go out and purchase the necessary materials on your own and assemble a lightsaber. All you need are pool noodles and some duct tape, and you’re set! See instructions here.
Watch the upcoming Star Wars trailers
Yes, any Star Wars fan worth his or her salt has probably already watched the trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story multiple times. But can you really watch a Star Wars trailer too many times? We don’t think so. So grab your popcorn bucket and re-watch the trailer for this movie for what might be the billionth time.
A prequel film about the origins of Han Solo is a concept that has made even the most die-hard fans of the franchise wary.
Like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the trailer for Solo lends a new vibe to the Star Wars universe. This has much more of a gangster/heist flick vibe, with plenty of gunfights, crazy flying, and harrowing escapes along the way.
Think you’ve seen everything there is to see? We’ll find out when the film hits cinemas on May 25th, 2018. It also won’t be long until the trailer for the upcoming Episode IX is gracing our screens in 2019.
Check out our list of the 50 upcoming movies including Solo: A Star Wars Story to make sure you’re caught up on dates and details beforehand.
Appreciate the Best Parodies Inspired by Star Wars
Keeping in mind that May 4 is a day for celebration and revelry, we’d be remiss in not taking a moment to admire the work of comedic minds who perfectly encapsulated both the ridiculous and amazing parts of the Star Wars franchise.
Hit US animated series Family Guy has good-naturedly lampooned Star Wars in the past, creating three tongue-in-cheek specials based on the initial trilogy of films, and referencing the science fiction saga in regular episodes.
You have to be a Star Wars fan to get all the jokes, and the whole exercise is a bit bizarre on paper, but it works.
Watch your way through Family Guy’s hilarious Laugh It Up, Fuzzball trilogy. Or simply go back and rewatch them all. Whatever you do, just don’t forget to laugh.
Remember Carrie Fisher
Thanks to growing up on Star Wars, the stereotypical princess of our youth wasn’t a weeping damsel in a castle, but a blaster-toting revolutionary fighting for freedom. Even Princess Leia, however, had nothing on Carrie Fisher herself, who lived a difficult life with brilliance, humour and verve, she was a legendary screenwriter and author, and an extremely funny human being, who is missed.
A funny actress, witty author, a strong advocate for mental health awareness. Carrie Fisher was all that and more.
“Will somebody get this big walking carpet out of my way?” – to the startled Chewbacca in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977).
So much for kissing the Wookie. Not even Chewbacca can escape her insults as she pushes him out of the way in the Hoth rebel base. Though, for being on a frozen planet, the warm, hairy Wookie might not be so bad to have around. It appears the princess’ patience is running low on Hoth, so everyone else is walking on thin ice!
She warms up to Chewie in time, but never forget that first impression. However, always remember this iconic quote by our Princess Leia.
Join the Dark Side
Want to keep the Star Wars fun going? Then consider joining the Empire with Revenge of the Fifth! Inspired by Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, the merriment can continue by celebrating the Sith Lords from Star Wars.
Notable Siths include Darth Sidious (none other than the emperor himself), Darth Maul, and the one and only Darth Vader. So, if your kids like storm troopers and Darth Vader more than Jedis and the Rebellion, then move your Star Wars celebration to May 5th and celebrate your inner Dark Side.
So, instead of a bunch of cosplayers dressed like Luke, Leia, Obi-Wan, and Han Solo, you will find friends dressed as Darth Vaders, Darth Mauls, Darth Tyranuses, and all those other evil Darths from the Star Wars universe. Because bad guys need love too!
Thoughts?
A day for all lovers of Jedi, the Resistance, the Skywalkers, the Hutts, Boba Fett, Gamorrean guards, Maz Kanata, General Grievous, Rancor Keeper and Snap Wexley uniting and celebrating all there is in the galaxy far, far way.
We hope that you’ve taken some of these ideas and are going to have the BEST Star Wars day ever on May 4th. Remember, Star Wars Day may happen only once a year but remember: The Fourth will be with you. Always.
How will you be celebrating Star Wars Day this year? Let us know in the comments!
MAY THE 4TH WILL BE WITH YOU, ALWAYS.
Great read! Thanks for ideas!
